Artist Statement: “Being an artist helps me to remember one of the most important things in living one’s life is to take time to love and appreciate those people and things that mean the most to us! I have learned through my teachers and mentors that each of us has the capacity for creativity, and like nursing, expressions of art that incorporate mind, body, & spirit capture the attention of the viewer.  I love the excitement of painting on location (plein air), watching vibrant colors and water come together to make interesting shapes that entertain and bring joy to others! While watercolor is my favorite medium, in the past year, I have expanded my paintings to include acrylics and oils.   Being a nursing professor as well as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, where I am often engaged in assisting others care for themselves, my role as an artist has given me one of the most effective ways to take care of my health, so that I might have a lot of energy and joy to share with my family and others.  An unanticipated but rewarding outcome of my art has been the continuing development of my spiritual being as I continue to gain a greater appreciation of our Creator’s gifts.”

Effective January 1, 2005, Lou retired from her administrative position as Associate Dean of the Undergraduate Program at the ECU School of Nursing. She now works part-time at the ECU College of Nursing, serving as faculty in the Nursing Education Concentration in the Master of Science in Nursing Program and is enjoying having more time for her family and art.

She and her husband, John Core, live in Greenville and have a condo at Atlantic Beach where she receives much of her inspiration for paintings that reflect her love for her family and eastern NC as evidenced by a predominant theme of “local flavor,” whether the paintings are elements of the sea, land, or people.

Lou is President of the Watercolor Society of N.C., and serves as Fundraising Chair. In addition, she is a member of the Southern Watercolor Society, Twin Rivers’ Artist Association, Greenville Museum of Art - Artists’ Association, and is one of the founding members and Past President of “Greenville Brushstrokes,” a group of approx. 65 artists who meet twice each month to critique each other’s art, share information, and promote art within the region.

She teaches a Beginner’s Sketchbook/Journaling/Watercolor (Plein Air) Class for the Greenville Museum of Art.  Lou’s painterly renderings can be seen in home/commercial staging by First Impressions Staging in various homes throughout the Greenville area.  She is also locally represented by University Art Gallery and Frame Shop, Gallery Art Prints (Arts and Materials) in New Bern , and Arts N Things and Art Escapes in Morehead City , NC .    She served from 2005-2006 as Events Coordinator/Artist at the Bob Pittman Art Studio.
